The Railway Coastal Museum tells the fascinating story of the great initiative, courage, and sacrifice involved in building and operating the Newfoundland Railway and Coastal Boat services. Theses services helped overcome isolation and opened up the vast resources of the island.
The Railway Coastal Museum occupies the entire ground floor and the passenger platform at the rear of the building.

The building’s grand neoclassical architecture has been beautifully restored and the Colonnial Building is once again a gathering place for people to explore, contemplate, challenge, commemorate, and debate our story of governance.
The Colonial Building was home to the Newfoundland and Labrador Legislative Assembly from 1850 until 1959.

1895 heritage apothecary replica
Dating between circa late 1700’s to the early 1800 the Newman Wine Vaults is one of the oldest standing structures in St. John’s. Constructed of brick and stone, the vaults were used to age the Celebrated Newman’s Port.

We have unique artifacts and archives dedicated to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, dating back to the War of 181. Our volunteer operators are some of the most knowlegeable researchers and authors on the history of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.

Centuries before the advent of ship-to-shore radio, signalman perched on Signal Hill surveyed the ocean for ships headed toward the port of St. John's. Flag signals flown on the hill communicated the names of arriving ships to those who inhabited the harbour.

The Commissariat was built between 1818-1820 as the home and offices of the Assistant Commissary General, the supply officer for British forces in Newfoundland. Today visitors are invited to explore life in St. John’s in the 1830s.
The Rooms in St. John’s is Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest public cultural space, housing a museum, art gallery, and archives. It showcases history, art, and heritage with stunning harbour views from its modern design, inspired by traditional fishing "rooms"
